Week End Get Away - different locations near Pune

Every year in December~ January my job is to find a place for Family HURDA Party.

Traditionally you are called by a farmer friend to have this party, but since we do not have own farm or farmer friend we need to pay and get Hurda.

Day by day it is becoming difficult to find good places who provide this, so this year I went to Gokhale farm which is near Alandi. When I inquired with them they said that last couple of years they have stopped this business.

So alternative was to go to Ahemadnagar which is @ 110 kms away from my home. Obviously I started hunting for alternative place near Alandi.

Incidentally I found "SANKALP GARDEN" near Alandi who provides HURDA as well as typical meals made in farms.

Last year the HURDA price was ~ 125 Rs per kilogram and the normal consumption is, 3~4 Kg for 5 persons, this year 2011 I have not still tasted it, so don'w know the price :-(

Till now you must be wondering what is this HURDA ?
So let me explain ...
Since Jowar crop (Sorghum) grows in most of the regions of Maharashtra. Somewhere in month of December to January tender stalks of Jowar (Sorghum) are ready in farms.
So these tender jowar (Sorghum) stalks are roasted / barbecued in hot coal ashes & then the roasted tendor Jowar (Sorghum) is called as HURDA.
So this HURDA is then served along with Chataney (desiccated coconut garlic with dried red chilli) and curd.
Hurda is really very tasty and you will really enjoy this Hurda party.

So instead of going to hotel in city this week end why don't to think of this outing on a farm, giving tasty food, the clean air, showing your children the grown crops. let them interact with the mud, insects, animals, let them be part of the Hurda roasting activity, I am sure they will enjoy it. Remember your old days where this was available everywhere & now limited to the villages.
